In the evening sun the rocks in front of the cape that seem like gold nuggets which gave the cape its name and the shallow water here creates a Caribbean flair. The fascinating lighthouse to be seen is located on an exposed point of the cape 76 m above sea level. Standing here on the cliffs is a highlight when you're on the east coast of the South Island.
